BBC regions dominated the announcement of the winning entries in the Prix CIRCOM 2014, for regional programmes and other skill categories. NRK Norway also won two awards.
The BBC collected four of the top awards – winning categories for Sport, Minorities in Society, Investigative Journalism and Video Journalism. The BBC was also commended in another category.
Other star winners were from Norway (Rising Star and Most Original), Bulgaria (Drama), France (Magazine and News Magazine) and The Netherlands (Documentary). In addition, a special category for co-production on European “citizenship” was won by Belgium.
There was a record entry of 228, including the co-production items. This included no fewer than 50 documentaries and 35 magazine programmes. There were 34 entries from Poland and 30 from the UK and in all 22 countries entered.
The awards werel presented at the CIRCOM Regional conference in Cavtat, near Dubrovnik, Croatia, on Thursday 8 May as part of a gala TV show transmitted by host broadcaster HRT.
Each category award offers prize money of 2000 euros, a trophy and a travel and accommodation bursary to attend the conference. In the case of the Rising Star award, the cash award is dedicated to supporting a short internship at another regional broadcaster in Europe. In the case of the special co-production award, the value to the winner is 1000 euros. In all categories there is also a “commended” entry which receives a travel and accommodation bursary for the conference.
The announcements were made after judging by 14 TV professionals from 14 different countries in Sofia, Bulgaria, as guests of the national broadcaster BNT.
On the gala TV show, the “best of the best” - the Grand Prix – was announced. The Grand Prix went to RTV Oost, The Netherlands, for the documentary Does God Love Women?
