On 10th and 11th November 2016 CIRCOM Regional held its European Board and Executive Committee meetings in Ponta Delgada, the Azores, the town where CIRCOM's next Annual Conference will be held on 25th and 26th May 2017. Meetings were hosted by RTP, Portugal’s Public Service Broadcasting company, which also hosts the upcoming Annual Conference.
The members of the European Board and Executive Committee were discussing and planning both future strategies and daily operations of the Association, and also visited proposed venues for the upcoming Annual Conference.
On 11th Nov CIRCOM's President Tone Kunst, Secretary General Fernando Ojea and Prix CIRCOM President David Lowen were received by the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, Vasco Cordeiro.
President Cordeiro highlighted how important hosting an annual conference which will gather more than 200 TV professionals is for the Azores, the westernmost region of the European continent.
"Hosting an annual conference of European PBS is one of the ways to make the reality of the Azores, which, in the middle of the Atlantic, faces its own challenges, known throughout Europe. The work of public radio and television services and, from a more global perspective, all regional organisations and media, has utmost importance in raising awareness and strengthening the identity of each region," said Vasco Cordeiro in a press conference after the meeting.
President of CIRCOM Regional Tone Kunst emphasized the importance of regional PSB in a more global media market, and said that the closeness that regional PBS have to their audience in their communities is crucial for the regional and local culture and public debate.
In RTP Azores's daily live magazine "Açores Hoje" Fernando Ojea spoke about the meetings of CIRCOM Regional and the Prix CIRCOM. Regarding the coming Annual Conference the regional broadcasters are discussing how to engage the young audience, he said to the anchor Vera Santos.
