The Fraunhofer Institute IIS has started to broadcast Mobile TV content via the new DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite Services to Handheld Devices) technology in the German city of Erlangen.

Since the project was founded in 2007, CIRCOM Regional has been one of the project partners. The first results and experiences of the Mobile TV trial were presented exclusively at the CIRCOM Annual Conference in Maribor in 2008.

The project goal is to develop and advance new broadcasting technologies for mobile content in order to extend the reception possibilities as well as creating new mobile content formats. This new technology supports terrestrial and satellite transmission as well as a combination of both.

Putting the DVB-SH transmitter into operation:
Peter Sauer, General Secretary CIRCOM Regional, Prof. Heinz Gerhäuser, Head of Fraunhofer Institute IIS;
Dr. Elisabeth Preuß, Major of the city of Erlangen, Wolfgang Geus, Municipal energy supplier Erlangen

In this practical approach a leading satellite carrier supports a test signal. The Fraunhofer Institute and the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg provides the terrestrial network. The viewer  is no longer depent on only one receiving path and could draw on the advantages of both technologies. In future this composition should guarantee an optimized Mobile TV coverage in cities as well as in  rural areas. At this stage Mobile TV viewers could receive a live bouquet of several TV-programmes among the programme of Bayerischer Rundfunk.

Project partners are the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS), the Information Technology sector of the Erlangen-Nürnberg University including the municipal energy supplier of the German city of Erlangen.

The latest experiences and results of the DVB-SH technology will be presented and published in the next CIRCOM Future Guide. The updated CIRCOM Future Guide will be distributed to all CIRCOM member stations at the next CIRCOM Annual Conference in Malta in 2010.
